Lieutenant DAVID JARMAN RLC...who was deployed to Afghanistan as a Lieutenant, and Advanced Search Advisor, commanding four specialist teams seeking Improvised Explosive Devices and returning locals to their homes. Leading a seven man search team, daily pre-dawn to late summer afternoon, he also led the break-in to establish a base in Loy Mandeh before air assault, clearing many compounds and removing IEDs under continuous small arms fire, later evacuating a wounded NCO during sustained IED recovery. He is also a key member of the Regimental rugby squad and athletics team, is training as an Ammunition Technical Officer, and hopes to return to Afghanistan.

              

 

Private SCOTT BREARLEY RLC...who in his first Regimental deployment, voluntarily, to St Kilda on a Ramped Craft Logistic, on two training exercises with the Landing Ship Dock Auxiliary, and on anti-piracy sea trials with HMS Dragon.  In 2011 he was a deckhand on Operation Cougar off Libya with the Combat Support Boat on maiden Regimental deployment. Instrumental in its success, in sea states not normally attempted by more senior mariners, he worked with Mexeflote and Army Workboat, and as navigator. HMS Dragon’s sea trials owe their success to his ability, fitness and discipline. Every skipper’s first choice deckhand, he has the qualities to command his own vessel.              

 

Squadron Leader VICTORIA GREEN RAF...now Officer Commanding Logistic Operations Flight, No 1 Expeditionary Logistics Squadron, RAF Wittering, who graduated top student from the Defence Movements School in 2010, moving to RAF Cottesmore as Harrier Force Logistics Plan Officer operationally, on exercise or embarkation to RN aircraft carriers, so effectively that she deployed to Al Minhad, Dubai as Deputy Senior Air Movements Officer, handling air transport through Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait in support of the Afghanistan theatre and Middle East operations.  With maturity and grace, she rapidly reshaped the role, improving inter-agency communications and contractor integration, and demonstrating professionalism far beyond her rank or experience.

 

Senior Aircraftman THOMAS DEAN RAF...whose work ethic marked him out from his peers at the Defence Movement School, where he scored 93% across 21 course exams. He made an immediate impact on the Air Movements Squadron at RAF Brize Norton, joining D Shift, completing a year’s Record of Achievement in eight months, and excelling during the Basic Movements Trade Development with his brief on the Basrah Wall at the National Memorial Arboretum. He has provided a high level of support to both Op Herrick and Op Kipion airbridge during the challenging Relief in Place procedure. In addition, he is a member of the RAF Swimming Team.

THE CARMEN’S 2 MECHANICAL TRANSPORT SQUADRON AWARD 2012 

 

Corporal PAUL BUCKLEY RAF...acting Corporal on the Operations Flight, instrumental in planning the first heavy freight convoy to Italy for operations over Libya, achieving a rare transit through Switzerland. He has sustained large convoys and sustainment runs to Italy, interfacing with key civilian and military agencies, taking the planning lead for a UN Class 1 (explosives) trial move through Europe. Operations team lynchpin in its largest commitment to date, he has also spearheaded the 2011 Help for Heroes 1800 mile European banger run race, raising £27,000 through 23 teams and 65 personnel, and entering his own car, spurred by his experience as an ex-Camp Bastion ambulance driver.               

 

Flight Lieutenant Mark RADBOURNE RAF...the Training Development Advisor within XXIV Squadron’s training flight, responsible for design and development of Hercules training across all air transport disciplines. With training then split among different squadrons with differing methods, he was tasked with marshalling courseware to consolidate quality syllabus and training plans. With a phenomenal workrate, he generated a final training product, forging an expert team and satisfying MoD requirements such that Group HQ recognises XXIV Squadron as leading the RAF in training quality and compliance. His work has earnt the gratitude of the entire Hercules force, and positive if informal recognition RAF-wide.                

 

Lieutenant HELEN HOBSON RN ...who deployed (organised during her honeymoon without her knowledge) in the unique role of Maritime Component Commander/Liaison Officer and Forward Logistic Site (FLS) Commander at Gioia del Colle, in support of operations off Libya. She rapidly established good relations with Maritime Forces and RAF personnel, aligning and developing procedures to ensure support to RAF and RN units, leading small teams with staff changes in new directions, and building close diplomatic liaison with senior Italian naval officers. Dynamic, flexible, persuasive and effective, she mentored crews and also established the first refurbishment at sea between a landing platform helicopter and mine counter-measures vessel. 

 

Petty Officer Chain MICHAEL BOSWORTH RN ...the second only Compliance Chief Petty Officer (Medical Assistant) appointed to the Waterfront Logistics Support Group, whose professionalism and energy corrected serious shortcomings in Portsmouth Flotilla ships’ medical readiness. Despite a Base Logistics Inspection, he daily visited frigates’ medical departments, finding and correcting shortfalls. He created the medical department in HMS Protector from scratch, identifying and rectifying totally inadequate facilities in time for operational deployment. He discovered shortfalls on HMS Atherstone, within 24 hours of her sailing, enabling her to proceed without delay. His exemplary performance has reinforced medical oversight at the waterfront and the operational capability of Portsmouth Flotilla.
