THE CARMEN’S VIVA SHIELD
 

Advanced Transport Systems Ltd. ...for developing; the ULTRA PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM; conceived at Bristol University, trialled at Cardiff, and operational at Heathrow in 2010, it offers low build-cost, lightweight, emission-free, energy-efficient electric mobility, easily integrated with other urban transport systems public and private, with no waiting, saving up to 30,000 bus journeys in its first year, the first such system anywhere in the world, generating sustainable solutions, and design, manufacture and operational wealth, within an anticipated global market by 2020 of £30bn.
 
               
 
THE SIR HENRY ROYCE MEMORIAL FOUNDATION AWARD
 

Brawn GP ...for winning the Formula 1 Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championship, uniquely in their first year, achieved by the leadership of Ross Brawn and Nick Fry, the excellence of the engineering team, led by aerodynamicist Lois Bigois and race director Ron Meadows, and their drivers, World Champion Jason Button and his team-mate, Reubens Barrichello, innovating successfully within new rules, with reliability, pace and flair.


THE CARMEN’S ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD


The Fuel Cells Group, Chemical Engineering Department, University of Birmingham (formed in 2000 and led by Professor Kevin Rendall FRS). ...for its successful work on projects including the hydrogen-powered house, England’s first permanent hydrogen filling station, and the Microcab hydrogen-fuelled vehicles designed by John Justins and Coventry University, demonstrating the feasibility of this ecologically friendly power-source in the real environment.


THE CARMEN AWARD OF MERIT
 

The family of the late Ken and Lew Norris ...for their Bluebird record-breaking cars and boats, automatic seat-belts, go-karts, rotary motorcycle engine, lift trucks and many other designs, over half a century of innovative engineering design, including Malcolm Campbell’s seven times record-breaking boat, the only boat and car to win both records the same year, the first automatic seat-belt and basis for today’s systems, and the first go-kart, providing low-cost racing for children. Never nationally honoured, the Norris Brothers led Britain’s dominance in land and water speed, evolved keynote driver safety and devised vehicles which launch world champion drivers – excellence and innovation deserving long overdue recognition.



THE HERBERT CROW MEMORIAL AWARD
  
 
The RAC Foundation Team ...for the report: 'The Car in British Society' which was commissioned and published by the Foundation, authored by Dr Karen Lucas and Professor Peter Jones, who researched the changes in the role of the car since the mid-1990s, together with Elizabeth Gilliard, Scott Le Vine and Professor John Polak, demonstrating the extension of car ownership to all levels of income, stabilised household car use, the perceived value of individual mobility, and the implications for public policy, not least in carbon emissions, household expenditure and transport futures.
