which confounded the critics and delivered unparalleled personal mobility, from the Royal Family to every athlete, official, VIP, commentator, helper or spectator, and ensured the volume movement of people and goods to keep London going about its everyday business during the Kingdom’s golden Games of 2012. It brought together every agency involved, to achieve multi-modal co-operation from the arrival of the torch relay in Cornwall to the departure of the Paralympians, through extraordinary assessment, planning, information exchange, diplomacy and operation. This was the means by which London once again proved it is the transport capital of the world.
THE CARMEN’S HERBERT CROW AWARD
Royal Air Force Museum Hendon
in recognition of its ground-breaking preservation strategy, designed to ensure the long-term serviceability and condition of all exhibits and to safeguard the associated knowledge and skills necessary to protect the nation’s aviation heritage. This has been achieved by devising programmes, schedules and enlightened educational methods, which include a new apprentice scheme. This strategy places the Museum in the vanguard of restoration and preservation, not only of its own collection, including motor vehicles, but elsewhere in the museum world, where it is regarded as an avant-garde centre of excellence.
THE CARMEN AWARD OF MERIT
The Ealing Community Transport Charity
for the delivery of wheelchair-accessible shuttle services at the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2012 for all those with disabilities, operating between railway stations and venues, the largest operation of its kind ever attempted, involving 24 community transport operators, 150 vehicles, 1000,000 journeys and over 500 drivers and 200 additional staff. It included a major training programme, and gave significant help to the blind, deaf, and less mobile and their companions. Despite massive surges in demand, this free-standing charity, unconnected to any local authority, performed impeccably, returning all financial benefits of the operation to the 24 communities concerned.
THE CARMEN’S RLC SAFETY AWARD
Force Protection Europe and Ricardo plc
for the design, development and manufacture in the UK of the Ocelot Foxhound Protected Patrol Vehicle, successfully trialled over two years and now on active service in theatre, safeguarding the mission and lives of forces personnel against enemy action, especially IEDs. A 7.5 tonne lightweight mine-protected vehicle, it offers optimum 100kmh speed, 2,000kg payload, flexibility, maintenance and protection, with its vee-shaped armoured spine or skateboard containing the drive line, fuel, generator, batteries and powerpack, modular construction, four wheel steering and 30-minute interchangeable pods for patrol, ambulance, logistics or fire support. The Foxhound offers the Forces flexible mobility with maximum safety.
