THE CARMEN'S ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD
BMW

for the i3 model, which significantly advances the technology of electric car design by  adopting a carbon fibre reinforced plastic structure for this electric hybrid car, a manufacturing advance which offsets the 230 kilogram weight of the lithium ion battery pack from which the i3 draws its power. In all-electric form it has a usable range of 80 to 100 miles, enough for the majority of daily journeys.  If fitted with an on-board petrol powered generator to recharge the battery on the move, the i3 can meet nearly all motoring needs, while its overall weight scarcely exceeds 1,300 kg.
