THE SIR HENRY ROYCE MEMORIAL FOUNDATION AWARD

M.I.R.A. (The Motor Industry Research Association) ...which has, in conjunction with Jaguar, Lotus and Caparo, developed a series hybrid version of the XJ Saloon, a vehicle that cruises at 85 mph, has an electric mode range of 30 miles and a hybrid range of 620 miles. Its equivalent fuel consumption can approach 57 mpg and, despite being a full size limousine, this is comparable to that of the original small hybrid saloon, demonstrating how similar technology can be applied effectively to a luxury car

THE CARMEN’S ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD

The Mayor Of London’s Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme ...which achieved 1.5 million journeys in the first three months of operation, and is rapidly moving beyond central London into neighbouring boroughs, with a target of 65 square kilometres’ coverage, 8,000 cycles, 4,200 docking points and a flexible system of provision where it is most needed. At a cost of 12pence a day and 100,000 initial members, the scheme has already had a profound social and economic impact, improving public health, enhancing individual mobility, and creating a sustainable alternative journey for residents, visitors, tourists and workers alike.

THE CARMEN AWARD OF MERIT
